Our flower garden in August can be brimming with activities we can do at this time of year, as we can for most of the year. We have some flower gardening tips to give you and some experiments to try. Feel free to send us your own flower gardening tips for any time of the year. If it is much too hot for you this August to work in your flower garden during the day, make the most of the early morning hours before it gets too warm. Watching the world wake up can be quite exhilirating.

Course morning here comes a little later than other places. ;-) This works well in July too. This month is important in the flower gardening year as its most important work can be taking cuttings. If you have a sunny window ledge within your home or you are lucky enough to have a heated greenhouse, consider taking cuttings of geraniums you planted out in the spring. Not only can you take up and overwinter the older plants from your flower garden, but you can have some newer, younger plants next spring that you start from the cuttings you take now.As with taking cuttings from many other plants, fuchsias, scented verbena, etc., simply make the cut which severs the cutting just below a joint and trim off the lower leaves. Today it is best if you can use rooting powder first, but simply place the cutting in some light potting soil in a pot.

Tamp down the soil firmly. Don't fill the pot to the top as you do need some room for watering. However, the first time you water the soil around your cutting, you may find you need to add more soil. Just do so and tamp that down firmly. Water this added soil as well.

However, do not overwater your cutting keeping the soil damp at all times. This will end up decaying your cutting and causing all sorts of unsavory growths on your soil. You can still do some sowing in your flower garden at this time of year. If you have some vacant spots within your flower garden, try sowing a little pansy seed of some of the more hardy varieties. You might even try sowing some blue cornflower seed some time before the end of the month. Be sure to thin them out even if you only end up with a half dozen plants left.

These August sown plants should end up twice the size of spring-sown ones. Why? Because you are going to pinch out the top of the growth when they are about four inches high. Do this carefully. You should end up with three growths in the place of the one. What happens? You will have a bushier plant.

If you wait till spring and do this again to those three growths, you end up with a bushier plant still with many more flowers. Our last of the flower gardening tips is simply to enjoy your flower garden. We should probably include this advice in everyone of our articles. Sometimes we get too busy with all the doing that a garden needs to keep looking nice and forget to relax and enjoy what we achieve. Even if your major achievement was to plant one pot of flowers for your patio or balcony and that is the extent of your flower garden, pat yourself on the back and enjoy it.? 2005, ..

The Best Methods for Flower Drying Before beginning the process of flower drying, it is important that you choose the right flower for the right project. To do so, you must bear in mind two key characteristics of the blossoming bud. The first truth is that in order to keep that color vibrant, you must dry it as fast as you can. However, the second truth is that the more heat you apply, the more shrinkage will occur. There are two points to keep in mind when you dry a flower.

First, the faster you dry a flower, the more color it will retain. Second, the more heat that is applied, the more shrinkage you will have of your flower. It is good to keep these points in mind as you choose the flower you want to dry and when considering your use of the dried flower. Since silica is actually a form of sand, you can substitute it with clean sand, borax or cornmeal. To use this method, you will need a dry container with a lid.

First, line the bottom of the container with a thin layer of the gel. Next, place the flower in the container while adding more gel around the bloom in order to avoid crushing it. Once it is secure, sprinkle some gel over top and cover it with the lid. Let it sit for about a week or until completely dry. When it is ready, a small paint brush can be used to remove the silica.

Using a dehydrator is your best bet if you are making potpourri. This is the speediest method as well as the most efficient for preserving fragrance. Remember, the more heat, the quicker your flower will dry. If your project calls for the flower to remain pliable once dried, glycerin should be used. In order to do this, place the stems of the plant in glycerin and allow it to be absorbed.

Keep in mind that glycerin may turn you leaves and flower to another color. Try a sample flower first if keeping the color is important to you..

In today's society, time is something we have very little of, and every moment we spend with our family and friends has become so precious. I recently had an experience with decorating my daughters room that made the best of my precious time and found it to be a special bonding moment with my daughter that I will never forget. My daughter is almost three now and has always had a fascination with flowers. She will pick any flower (even some weeds) and give them to me as a special gift. I've always wanted to fill her room with the bright flowers that she loved so much. I never made it much further than to purchase some bedding with flowers on it that was on sale at target.

I've never thought of myself as much of a designer or artist, but I found myself inspired to finish my daughters room when I ran across some brightly colored daisy wall stick ups from Presto Chango Decor.com. (http://www.prestochangodecor.com/) My inspiration came from an idea that was mentioned on there website stating that their flower stickers could be placed on foam board/posterboard and cut out to make a curtain valance or even placed on the furniture. I purchase both a large and small set of their daisy pop flowers and expanded a little on some of their idea's.First I planned to make a curtain valance. I bought some poster board that can be found at an art supply store, office supply, or even target that cost about two dollars for a 4ft.x 4ft. sheet.

I first I measured the curtain rods in my daughters room and made sort of a half box out of the posterboard. My window just happened to be small enough to do this with the 4ft of posterboard, but keep in mind that if your window is larger than this it might be fine because the flower appliqu?s will overlap the valance box itself to some degree. My next step was to occupy my little one with a movie. Then I use a razor knife to carefully cut out a top piece to anchor to the top of the curtain rods and a piece to hang down the front. I first used a glue gun to bond the two sides together but later reinforced this with duck tape since the flower appliqu?s would cover the tape from sight anyway.

I punched two holes on the top piece of posterboard on either side of the curtain rod using a screw and a screwdriver (you could use a drill or a whole punch if you have one handy). I then used regular trash bag ties to string through these holes to secure the posterboard to the top of the curtain rod. I peeled the flower stickers from the backing and applied them to the remaining posterboard and carefully cut them out with a razor knife. I then applied the new flower appliqu?s to my posterboard valance, using a glue gun. I stuck the larger ones (8in.)on first followed by overlapping the smaller ones being careful to cover any view of the duck tape on the valance behind it.

After I was done, It looked amazing. I had seen this concept for this valance somewhere in one of the major department stores which for the life of me I can't remember where. I do however remember the price $149.99. I took tremendous pride in myself in creating the same valance using one of the smaller sets of the daisy pop flower stickers and some posterboard. All of which cost me about $30.00 total.

My second idea was to use the flower stickers as a template to trace them onto a felt fabric, and them apply them to an existing plain white curtain. I cut out various sizes of the daisy wall stickers (backing and all) with scissors. You can use any type of fabric you want like sheets or clothes that you no longer wear. I didn't have any of the right colors so I purchased some felt in 6 different bright colors to match the flowers. You can purchase the felt sheets in 1sq.

ft. pieces for about .49 cents a piece at your local fabric store. I turned the flower stickers face down on the felt, as not to damage them. I traced a pattern on the felt with a fabric chalk then cut them out. I use some small cups I had to trace the center dots for my felt daisy's.

I used some fabric glue to adhere the center pieces on the daisies and then attack them to my white curtain. My third idea was to use old Christmas lights that no longer worked as a curtain tie back. I used some of the flower sticker/posterboard combination again and drilled little holes the back of the posterboard to place over the Christmas lights, securing them using the glue gun. It worked beautifully. It looked like flowers on a vine. I used the same concept as the curtain valance to create a wonderful headboard.

Another idea that I would love to do if I knew how to sew, would be to take two plain white sheets, cut them to size to fit my comforter and then sew them together to make a cover. Then I would use velcro at one end , slide an old comforter in and use the same felt concept I used on the white curtain to make a matching comforter. By this time the movie my daughter was somewhat watching was over, and she made it clear that it was her time to help. The only thing left to do was to peel and stick the flower stickers to the wall, and furniture and we were done. This was the fun part, because my little girl could helped me.

She went a little wild with her choices to stick the stickers, but she and I had so much fun. The whole project did take a little longer than an hour, but the memories will last forever..

Imagine a never-ending supply of beautiful flowers for your home, bouquets and arrangements to give to friends, flowers to pluck at will for gifts, get-well visits, anniversaries and birthdays. By planting a garden stocked with flowers that happily give up their blooms for your pleasure, you can have fresh flower arrangements in every room in your home all throughout the spring and summer. To create your own bouquet garden, start with a sunny spot in your yard. A garden spot that gets 6 to 8 hours of direct sun a day is ideal. It should be within easy reach for watering, since a cut flower garden will need daily watering during any dry spells. You'll also want to design it to make it easy for you to reach all the flowers in it, so a raised bed that can be approached on four sides is perfect.

If you decide to plant against a fence or as a border, make sure that you can get to all the plants without stepping on others by putting in footpaths or trenches for walking. The best way to start your cut flower garden is with bulbs planted in the autumn. Daffodils and tulips are among the most popular spring bouquet flowers. By getting them in the ground in the autumn, you'll be able to start cutting early in the spring. Some more unusual spring-flowering bulbs that make gorgeous cut flowers include:Giant flowering onion ? Grows 3-4 feet tall, with huge purple blooms. Great as a back border in a cut flower garden. Blossoms from mid-spring through early summerWindflower ? also known as anemone, with daisy like deep pink and white flowers, booms through midsummerCrocus ? blooms in early spring, though there are varieties that bloom through autumnHyacinth ? Tall clusters of blossoms that are stunning in arrangements.

Pink, blue, purple and white, they grow up to 12 inches tall. Bloom in early to mid-summer from fall planting.Grape Hyacinth- Purple flowers that bloom in autumn and remain green throughout the winter?although it's dormant in the summer.Early in the spring, you can start planting gladiolus. These huge, showy blooms are a mainstay of cut flower arrangements, and come in just about every color imaginable. Gladiolus bulbs can be planted as early as two weeks before the last frost. If you plant a new set of gladiolus every two weeks, you'll have cut flowers from early summer all the way through the first frost.Roses are an entire subject of their own, but they deserve special mention when discussing cut flower gardens.

Rambling and climbing varieties of roses are especially suited to cut flower gardens, putting out masses of blooms and responding to cutting with even more flowers. Trail a rambling rose along a wooden fence rail and you'll have sweet-smelling roses for your bedroom dresser all summer long. Also in early spring, you can plant your annuals. Snapdragons, cosmos and zinnias all bloom at different times during the summer, which will extend your ?bouquet season' into the fall.Don't forget to include ?filler' flowers in your cut flower garden. Foliage grasses and flowers like alyssum, baby's breath, and Queen Anne's Lace can fill spaces in your bouquets and add a lacy, delicate touch to a vase full of flowers..

What shape do you want it to be? It has to be substantially larger than that half bowl as you need to makeroom for the frame.Cut both sheets of cardboard into the shape of your chosen frame1 sheet would be the backing inside, the other would be just the frame. Make 2 holes in the backing that would be hidden behind the frame.

Most people would think of fall as a season when trees are changing colors and dying. For many, the autumn leaves are our last dance with color before the dark, gray winter sets in. It doesn't have to be that way, though. Fall flowers can offer a splash of rebirth and color in a season otherwise known for falling leaves.Bulbs are living plants and contain their own storage of food. They are quite self-sufficient and will strive to bloom, no matter when or where they are planted.

Fall flower bulbs are planted in the spring or summer and flower in the early fall. Some examples are lilacs, colchicums, and saffron crocuses. The colchicums are extremely unusual in that they will bloom without being planted, though they do need soil to develop roots. When selecting fall flower bulbs, you should look for bulbs that are firm and free of visible defects. If you desire large flowers, buy large bulbs. Small bulbs will produce smaller flowers. Most fall flower bulbs cannot survive the winter.

These have to be dug up each fall and stored until planting time. Bulbs should be stored in a cool, dry place. A dry basement is ideal. If you do not have a basement, a dark, unheated closet or utility room will also work. For individual planting directions, use your package. Most bulbs grow best in well-drained, loose soil.

Standing water or excessively moist soil will cause bulbs to rot. Do not plant bulbs at the bottom of a hill. Bulbs should be planted six to eight inches in the soil. Cover and pack firmly. After planting, water your bulbs thoroughly.

Water them occasionally, and they should bloom in early autumn..

Flowers are great gifts for practically any occasion, but there are some basic rules of flower etiquette. With the popularity of ordering flower delivery online, some buyers may not get the sound advice they'd get from a local florist. This guide presents the real meaning behind different flower types, and when they are best used.Red Roses:Red roses are always a great gift for a lover for practically any occasion or for no occasion at all. Indeed the power of "I love you" behind long stemmed red roses given to a significant other is a winner for any occasion, and is especially powerful when given for no occasion at all. The red rose signifies "romantic love", so it may be a bit much in some cases.

However, most will find that red roses are a consistent winner.Yellow Roses:Yellow roses are the flower of friendship. They are a perfect gift for a co-worker or sibling. However, they might be too timid to express romantic interest. They do not express the romanticism of the red rose.Pink Roses:Pink roses are the flowers of secret love. They are a perfect medium between the friendship of a yellow rose, and the romantic love of the red rose.

They express a secret love, and should not be mistaken purely as a friendship gift like the yellow rose.White Roses:White roses are the flowers of innocent love. They are ideal for family members and family occasions, even funerals.Carnations:Carnations are the flower of fascination. They are an ideal flower to give to a romantic interest that has not yet blossomed into a relationship. Orchids:Orchids are the flowers of love and beauty. They can be given for practically any occasion to practically anybody.

Orchids are universally appealing flowers that do not carry significant meaning for most occasions.Daisy:Daisies are the flowers of loyal love. They are a perfect flower to give to a mother on Mother's Day, or for any occasion. Picking Daisies for Mom practically goes along with Apple Pie.Lily:The Lily is the flower of purity and sweetness. It is an ideal flower to give to a niece or daughter.Chrysanthemum:The Chrysanthemum is a flower of friendship, so it will go well on any occasion, but may not be ideal for expressing romantic interest.Flowers are great gifts, and it is difficult to do too much wrong when getting flowers for anybody. But if you follow the etiquette noted above, you will be able to express yourself better with flowers.http://www.cheapflowerdelivery.info.
